  • What is ThermoWood?
ThermoWood is the name given to the process of putting timber in its sawn state, through a special high-temperature kilning process, developed many years ago in Finland. Thermally modifying the timber not only protects the timber with a high heat and steam process but also brings about chemical changes to the cell structure. The ThermoWood process removes the natural resins, sugars, and impurities present in all timbers, and the sugars caramelise which changes the colour of the timber to honey or dark brown colour depending on the timber species being processed. Natural timbers are prone to expanding, contracting, and distorting across their width, however, this process minimises that problem. This is very important given the high and variable moisture levels we experience in the UK.
  • What Are The Benefits Of ThermoWood Timber?
    1. Dimensionally Stable – Eliminating bending, twisting, and cupping characteristics. 2. Durability – 30+ years because of the very low water absorption which prevents decay and fungal growth and the absence of resins and sugars that insects like which contributes to natural wood decay. 3. 100% Recyclable – Produced from renewable FSC-certified forests. ThermoWood has no chemicals and does not go into landfill sites. Offcuts can generate heat that has a higher output than conventional timber and does not spit and crackle because of the lack of air trapped inside the timber. 4. Uniform Colour: This is because of the caramelising of the sugars, and because the timber is dry and free from resins it takes Gluing, Oiling, Painting, and Varnishing far better. 5. Heat and Sound Insulation: This improves performance by as much as 25% compared to regular timber. 6. Fire Resistant: This is improved because of the absence of resins and sugars and ThermoWood in its natural state is 30% more fire resistant than regular wood and carries a Class B certification.
  • What is ThermoChar?
The art of charring/burning wood to make the wood resistant to fire, rot, insects and the UV effects from the sun. The process of charring/burning the outer surface brings out the richness of the different wood species grain structure. Also varying the intensity of the burning process produces different finishes.
  • Why Do We Not Char Un-Thermally Modified Timbers?
    1. The moisture content is generally high between 15% - 20% When you then apply a high degree of heat to one surface rapidly, the board surface will crack and the board will cup across its width. Moisture content in ThermoWood is only 7% therefore no distortion will occur during the charring, leaving you with a flat and stable board. 2. Due to the presence of the natural Tanin, Resin, Sugars, and impurities, the intense heat bubbles these to the surface causing disruption to the surface finish. None of these are present in ThermoWood having already been removed during the ThermoWood process. Therefore the surface is charred but remains intact. 3. The action of charring the surface of the timber, naturally makes that surface become brittle and therefore more delicate. However, applying this charred surface to a timber that is still prone to expansion and contraction like Larch and Oak, Kebony and Cedar etc. This means that the brittle charred surface will crack under the movement of the timber and over time deterioration of the surface will be inevitable.
  • Is AtelierClad® & AtelierDeck® UV Resistant?
Our Atelier Brushed-Grain Cladding and Decking range has a three-stage UV-resistant coating system with a washable surface. In effect, the coating system has been made flexible to accommodate any subtle movement in the timber. This coating will also resist flaking, cracking, and peeling, it is also Non-Flammable and has a low VOC, so it can be used internally and externally. Our sample panels have been walked over as doormats continuously with work boots for the past 18 months in our yard and the colour still remains.
